Hose fittings look simple — machined aluminum, a barb, a nut. But they are pressure-critical components: a fitting that leaks or bursts at 300 psi strands a customer's vehicle and stains your brand. If you are comparing suppliers for bulk A/C fitting orders, run every sample through this checklist.

1. Material and machining

  • 6061-grade aluminum is the standard for A/C fittings: light, corrosion-resistant, and kind to O-rings. Steel (often zinc-plated) appears on heavy-duty and iron-nut variants.
  • Check the barb profile — the ridges that grip the hose insert must be sharp and uniform. Rounded or inconsistent barbs let the hose walk off under pressure.
  • Sealing surfaces (O-ring groove, flare cone) must be smooth and concentric. Run a fingernail across the flare: any step or chatter marks will weep refrigerant.

2. Sealing system: O-ring vs flare

Most ranges carry both in straight, 45° and 90° versions — angle coverage matters more than buyers expect because routing space in the engine bay dictates the angle.

3. Sizing and thread standards

Fittings are sized by hose ID (#5 to #12, i.e. 5/16" to 3/4") and joined by either UNF threads (9/16-18, 5/8-18, 3/4-16, 7/8-14, 1 1/16-14) or metric threads (M16×1.5, M22×1.5, M24×1.5). Mismatches here are the #1 cause of returns. A serious supplier publishes the exact thread for every SKU — like our XLF series catalog, which lists part number, size, angle, seal type and thread on every line.

4. Crimp quality (if buying complete hose assemblies)

  • The crimp collar must be concentric — measure at 4 points with calipers; variation over ~0.1 mm signals worn tooling.
  • Pull-test a sample: the hose should not separate below the system's burst rating.
  • Burrs inside the fitting bore shed particles into the refrigerant circuit — reject any sample with visible chips.

5. Surface treatment and corrosion

Anodized aluminum resists road salt; bare machined aluminum pits within a season in coastal markets. If your customers are in coastal or winter-salt regions, specify anodized or coated fittings — the cost difference is minor, the shelf-life difference is not.

6. Supplier checks

  1. Ask for material certificates (alloy and temper).
  2. Request leak test data — fittings should be pressure-tested, not just sampled.
  3. Order samples across the angle range (straight / 45° / 90°) before committing, and crimp them on the hose brand you actually sell.
  4. Confirm packaging — bulk boxes should have dividers so threads don't bruise each other in the container.

For a reference range that already passes all of the above, browse our hose adapters series and the XLF fitting catalog — every listing carries its size, angle, seal type and thread.
